Maude Barlow is the National Chairperson of The Council of Canadians,  and the co-founder of the Blue Planet Project, working internationally for the right to water.


The world's water crisis due to climate change, pollution, industrial growth and a surging population is of such magnitude that close to two billion people now live in parts of the world running out of water. By 2025, two-thirds of the world may suffer from water shortages. By 2050, we will need 80 percent more water just to feed ourselves: no-one knows where this water will come from.


Around the world, several mighty contests are brewing over the world's fresh water supplies: between countries, between the needs of growing urban populations, and rural communities; between humans and other species, and between those who see water as a commodity to be put on the open market like running shoes and those who see it as a global commons, a public trust and a human right. Maude Barlow will talk about these "battles," what they mean for Americans, and how we can head them off. She will call for a "Blue Covenant" to protect the world's precious freshwater resources and the right to water for all.


Maude Barlow is the National Chairperson of The Council of Canadians, Canada's largest public advocacy organization, and the co-founder of the Blue Planet Project, working internationally for the right to water. She serves on the boards of the International Forum on Globalization and Food and Water Watch, as well as being a Coucillor with the Hamburg-based World Future Council. Maude is the recipient of six honorary doctorates, the 2005/2006 Lannan Cultural Freedom Fellowship Award, and the 2005 Right Livelihood Award (known as the "Alternative Nobel") for her global water justice work. She is also the best-selling author or co-author of sixteen books, including Blue Gold: The Fight to Stop Corporate Theft of the World's Water and the recently released Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and the Coming Battle for the Right to Water.
