Good afternoon.

Please join Mountain Home for a special day of paddling for one of our members, Paul Martin.

Paul has recently been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a serious and complicated cancer.  He and his wife Amber, as well as their family and friends know that he will beat this difficult disease and he is currently undergoing very intense and deliberate treatments to do so.

Over the next three months Paul will be undergoing treatments costing his insurance an exorbitant amount of money.  Paul is unsure how much of the final bill will be covered by insurance and in the meantime has very steep deductibles to cover these treatments.  After three months he will be hospitalized for two weeks and undergo intensive chemotherapy scouring all his bones and receive a stem cell transplant.  He will be out on disability for a yet to be determined time period which will be difficult for their family financially.

Over the past month Mountain Home has been planning a long distance paddle around Sauvie Island on Saturday, October 3.  Some of us are considering this a Paddle for Paul and raising money to sponsor our 52 mile paddle by making a medical contribution to Paul and his family.  I have had conversations about this concept with Paul and even though he is flattered some would consider this he also is tentative as he doesn't want people feeling obligated to him or sorry for him.

He also wants to be clear that he is unsure how much they will need at this point and doesn't want anyone to feel compelled to sponsor the paddle if they do not want to.  Any money that is raised, he and Amber will use towards his treatments.  Any funds that are raised that he does not use he will be putting towards a Fund that contributes to continued Multiple Myeloma research.

The Sauvie paddle is 52 miles.  If you would like to use this as an opportunity to raise money for Paul & Amber and their fight against Multiple Myloma please do so!  This is a personal undertaking to raise money.  No one will know if you do or don't and you do not have to do it.

Paul's Fund has been set up at:
OnPoint Credit Union
Paul Martin Fund
Account Number 987751

OnPoint envelopes are located at the MHCC clubhouse in my file.  Or you can mail checks to me and I can add them if you are not a current MHCC member.  2930 N. Holman Street, PDX 97217.

Thank you again for supporting such an amazing cause if you choose to do so.  Please remember that your contributions are kept confidential.

If you choose to email Paul, please take note that Paul has moved beyond the initial shock of this - as he hopes that all of you will as well - and is now permanently dedicated to the positive and successful fight to rid himself of cancer and join us again on the docks. Best to all,
Laura (still in Phoenix!)
